Chapter 8

Silveras decided to attack the Fortress again the next day. There were heavy losses in the first charges, and there were wounded men staggering back, away from the day’s scene of carnage. Herreras and his men were left with the rest of Silveras’s men while the captain rode back to find out more about Emilio. He knew that he had a valuable prisoner, a man who surely knew a great deal about the Rangers to the north. His superiors in Monterrey would be very pleased to learn about the manpower of the San Antonio Volunteers and the Rangers themselves.

When he reached his camp, Emilio was eating and sitting up, though still fastened to the stake. His guards were laughing and joking with him. ‘This man . . . he speaks Spanish . . . he even tells stories in Spanish, Captain,’ said the guard in charge, who stood and saluted Silveras, as did the other two guards behind.

‘Very interesting, I’m sure, but he will have no more food until I give the order!’ Silveras kicked the plate of food away, out of Emilio’s hands.

‘Bring him into the sun . . . tie him over there, where he will burn. I’m resting for a while. When I come back, he will answer questions or be left to bake while we move on!’

Emilio was taken from shade into the scorching sun and tied hands and feet. Then he was left to wriggle where he could, but he could not stand. He felt more like a snake than a man. But he managed to find a spot with some cover, and the guards, kindly towards him now, let him stay there. One brought him water, tipping the canteen into the prisoner’s parched mouth.

There was only one thing on Emilio’s mind now: to get out of there, and fast.
